Fire door held open by fire extinguisher

When is a fire door not a fire door… when it’s ajar!

It’s an old joke, but we’ve all seen a fire door held open with a wedge or by a fire extinguisher, and maybe thought “Why not, it’s a hot day, let some fresh air in,” or “Somebody’s probably moving something heavy,” but there are NO excuses… a fire door is rendered completely useless if it’s held open in this way, it is dangerous, against fire safety regulations, and illegal!

So, who’s responsibility is this? Health and safety, facilities management? It’s EVERYBODY’S RESPONSIBILITY to make sure that fire doors are not restricted in this way. If you see a fire door held open by a foreign object, don’t risk people’s lives by ignoring it or waiting for someone else to do something about it, do the right thing and remove the obstacle, and let the fire door do its job.
